ZACA urges entry of fourth mobile phone network

Zambia Consumer Association ZACA has urged government to revisit its position on the introduction of a fourth mobile phone service provider.
ZACA Executive Director Muyunda Ililonga says restricting entry into the the communications sector is giving some form of protection to existing international companies to abuse consumers through high charges.
Mr. Ililonga says government must allow the entry of more mobile phone companies into the sector to enhance competition which will result in a reduction of costs associated with making calls.
He says the communication sector should not be closed to a few players because it is key to delivering growth in the economy.
Meanwhile Mr. Ililonga has backed governments call on Airtel to reduce the cost of making calls on the mobile network.
He says government has a responsibility of ensuring that mobile phone companies are providing affordable services to consumers.
He was speaking in an interview with Flava Business News Tuesday morning.
Transport, Works, Supply and Communication Minister Yamfwa Mukanga has urged Airtel Zambia to consider reducing the cost of making calls on their network so that Zambians can utilize their phones for business purposes and not for mere luxury.
The Minister said Airtel should strive to reach a level where all Zambians are able to make business calls on this network thereby using the phones as necessities to improve their living standards.
He was speaking shortly after he toured Airtel head office to familiarize himself with the operations of the giant telecommunication service provider.
