ZACA welcomes law compelling mobile service providers record subscribers personal details

Zambia Consumer Association (ZACA) has welcomed the drafting of a law to compel mobile service and electronic communication network providers to record their subscribers̢۪ personal details.
ZACA Executive Director Muyunda Ililonga says recording personal details of subscribers will go a long way in enhancing security in the nation.
He says Zambia is not the only country that is practicing this law as many African nations are doing the same.
Mr. Ililonga notes that communication networks and mobile service providers are often abused because some subscribers buy sim cards to settle personal differences and later subject the sim cards to refuse.
Transport, Works, Supply and Communication deputy minister Mwenya Musenga said during questions for oral answer in Parliament on Friday that the law formulated on statutory instrument number 65 of 2011, will make it mandatory for sellers of cell phone sim cards to capture identification details of the subscriber.
Mr. Musenge said the law has been drafted and is expected to come into effect this June.
